Island Recreation Center Expansion to Open Doors in January
The long awaited and highly anticipated opening of the expanded Island Recreation Center has arrived. Two years after the groundbreaking on January 5th, 2017, the Island Recreation Center will open its doors on January 7th, 2019, unveiling the Carmines Recreation Building. The Town of Hilton Head provided $13.2 million for the renovation and expansion of the rec center while Hilton Head People for Parks raised $1.2 million dollars to up fit the buildings. The official ribbon cutting will take place on January 31st at noon.
The addition is named the Carmines Recreation Building to commemorate the long-standing partnership and support of the DMC Foundation. The Carmines Family founded The DMC Foundation in honor of David McGee Carmines. The Island Recreation Association and DMC Foundation have partnered for over 10 years to produce community events, including The Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for Carmines Family Recreation Scholarship Fund, Gullah Institute, Port Royal Sound Foundation, Coastal Discovery Museum and the Medical University of South Carolina.
Starting January 7th and ending the 14th, the Carmines Recreation Building will open its doors free of charge. Patrons can utilize the open gym, walking track, and surrounding cardio and strength equipment. In addition, all land fitness classes will also be complimentary.
