Dear Friends of The Literacy Center,
I hope and pray your Christmas was filled with family, friends and memories to last a lifetime. I, for one, am looking forward to the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead in 2021.
The phrase, "hindsight is 20/20" means looking back at a situation or an event and having a clearer understanding of it and how things could have been done better. The pandemic and its effects on our community has caused me to pause, look back and recast our future vision of success. Mark Twain said this about change, “the only person that likes change is a baby with a wet diaper.” What was true in Mark Twain’s day is still true today, only more so. You and I are living and working in a time of unprecedented and accelerating change. Good leaders know that adapting to change is not just a technique, it’s a mindset.
At TLC, we are embracing the change and moving forward to address the generational cycles of illiteracy and the associated poverty issues that affect nearly 65% of our adult learners. We have had to pivot and change the normal deliver process of our services and develop new programs to address the current needs. This has resulted in online classes, greater access to technology tools for our students and new workplace training programs.
We’ve had to invest ahead of the needs to keep pace with the rising tide of request for our services. We’ve been blessed to secure some new grants to help with this investment, but more is required if we want to have a deep and lasting impact on our student’s current needs. There is a sense of desperation amongst many of our adult learners. Many have lost their jobs and need new skills to re-engage in the workplace.
Can we count on you to make a much-needed year-end gift to support the future success of our program and our students?
