    Commerce Communications
Life sciences - a sector already experiencing significant growth in recent years - has evolved into one of the most critical industries as companies race to safely and effectively stop the COVID-19 pandemic.
South Carolina is one of the states helping lead the charge in this fight. Home to distinguished medical device, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, the Palmetto State has become a top destination for the life sciences industry. Thanks to our talented and innovative workforce, cutting-edge research institutions and world-class hospital systems, the life sciences sector accounts for an annual economic impact of $11 billion in S.C.
In an effort to continue this growth and build on S.C.'s innovative life sciences network, the South Carolina Department of Commerce partners with the S.C. Biotechnology Industry Organization (SCBIO), the statewide life sciences industry association and economic development organization that works to actively promote, build, support and expand the state's life sciences industry.
To further this dynamic sector's growth, SCBIO will host more than 500 industry executives; leaders in government and higher education; and biotechnology and pharma executives at its annual conference, SCBIO 2021. The two-day virtual event - themed "The Power of Us" - provides a great opportunity for industry stakeholders to gather and examine ways to further strengthen life sciences across South Carolina.
The world's reliance on the life sciences sector has never been more in the forefront. As we aim to promote this important industry cluster, while also combating a global pandemic, connecting leaders and stakeholders remains vital. After all, when many smart people are gathered at once with the same mission, good things happen.
    Bobby Hitt,
    Secretary of Commerce
