Bluffton… More than a Gateway to Hilton Head Island
In the early 1800s, our town was first known as "May River". Later, it was "Kirk's Bluff" until 1853 when the town of "Bluffton" became chartered. The name "Bluffton" came about as a compromise between the Kirk and Pope families and refers to the high banks on which the town stands.
Bluffton has quickly evolved from its original one-square mile town, centered around Calhoun Street, which many today refer to as "Old Town Bluffton". Our little town now includes almost 53 square miles size. As a result of this rapid development, Bluffton has evolved into the premier economic driving force in the region, featuring a high quality educational system from grade school to higher education, as well as our unique diverse culture and lifestyle.
We’re historic, too! On July 31, 1844 an estimated 500 people gathered around a now famous oak tree (The Secession Oak) to hear Robert Barnwell Rhett's speech to encourage the South to secede from the Union, triggering what is now known as the “Bluffton Movement”. The Succession Oak is located on private property near the Stock Farm development on Highway 46.
