Memory Matters Reinforces Commitment to Hilton Head Island with Strategic Building Sale and Plans for Growth
Hilton Head Island, SC, October 1, 2025
Memory Matters is announcing the sale of its Hilton Head Island building to the Town of Hilton Head Island as part of a long-term strategy to strengthen its mission and expand services for individuals and families impacted by dementia. Under the terms of the agreement, Memory Matters will continue operating at its current location through a leaseback until a new facility is ready for occupancy, thus ensuring that all programs and services continue safely and without interruption during the transition.
“Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of the families we serve,” said Jill Horner, Executive Director of Memory Matters. “We are committed to providing seamless, compassionate care throughout this transition and beyond. This sale allows us to plan boldly for the future while continuing to meet the growing needs of our community today.”
Memory Matters is actively working to secure a new, permanent facility on the north end of Hilton Head Island, with the goal of creating a dementia-friendly, accessible space that prioritizes safety, flexibility, and long-term sustainability. The organization remains equally focused on expanding its presence in Beaufort and Jasper counties to ensure broad access across the Lowcountry.
“This is a thoughtful, mission-driven step forward that strengthens our sustainability and positions us for long-term impact,” said Kelley Jewett, Board President. “Importantly, we have also received a significant, restricted gift from an anonymous donor that underscores and supports our commitment to maintaining a strong Hilton Head Island presence. The terms of this gift ensure the proceeds will be used solely for a new island location.”
Memory Matters will keep families, donors, and community members fully informed through regular email updates, press releases, and social media posts as plans progress.
“The Memory Matters team has an important and critical mission to support individuals and families in the community who are dealing with the many challenges that come with dementia diagnoses,” said Mayor Alan Perry. “We celebrate their ability to pursue a new home through this wonderful donation; it serves as a reminder of the incredible philanthropic spirit of this Island. And through this sale, we also appreciate their help with the Town’s efforts to preserve and protect our Island’s character and historic neighborhoods through land acquisition.”
The Town of Hilton Head Island is purchasing the property with funding from the Gullah Geechee Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation and the associated Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district funding mechanism in place to stimulate economic growth and revitalization.
